Law Society and Law Council advocacy efforts

The Law Society has been an active advocate for many years, both directly and through the Law Council of Australia as a constituent body, in representing the interests of the profession in relation to the AML CTF legislative reforms.

The Law Society participates in:

  • Several AUSTRAC groups, including the Rules and Guidance Working Group, and Legal and Conveyancing Industry Forums; and
  • The LCA’s AML CTF Working Group, which is chaired by the LCA President and involves representatives from law societies and bar associations across Australia

Our AML CTF Working Group

In 2024, the Law Society established an AML CTF Working Group which includes members with expertise in AML CTF, the Law Society CEO, and representation from the Legal Practice Board of Western Australia.

The Working Group meets monthly, with a focus on developing submissions to ensure the WA profession contributes to AUSTRAC consultations, and to advise the Law Society on CPD programming and resource development.

During 2025 and 2026, AUSTRAC is undertaking phased consultations as it prepares the AML CTF Rules, Guidance, and additional resources for specific sectors.

This page will be regularly updated with Law Society and Law Council advocacy and submissions.
