Join us for our 2025 Law Week Book Club Forum!

This popular event makes a triumphant return for Law Week 2025, this year focusing on the book Mean Streak by award-winning journalist and writer Rick Morton. The book is described as “a gripping and horrifying account of how, over the course of four and a half years, Australia’s government turned on its most vulnerable citizens” via the implementation of the Robodebt scheme.

This is a confronting book that explores the intersection of law, justice, and morality. It is a scathing critique on the power imbalance between governments and individuals, and shines a light on how this imbalance can impact the most vulnerable in society if law and morality are cast aside.

Chaired by Karess Dias, Solicitor, State Solicitor’s Office, we will hear from a panel of experts in the field – including victims of Robodebt and those who represented them – for an insightful discussion not to be missed.

Panellists –

  • Adam Sharpe, Barrister, Francis Burt Chambers
  • Kate Beaumont, Executive Director, Welfare Rights and Advocacy Service
  • Isabel Inkster, Solicitor, State Solicitor’s Office and victim of Robodebt

We are also delighted to include a virtual Q&A with Rick Morton, Author of Mean Streak and Senior Journalist at The Saturday Paper.

The book can be purchased at Boffins or any good book seller.

This intimate event is free to attend and bookings are limited. The forum includes the opportunity to network with colleagues and fellow book enthusiasts over light food and refreshments.
