New Judicial Appointments to the District Court

Tuesday, 1 June 2021

The Law Society of Western Australia congratulates barrister Lisa Campbell-Tovey and Supreme Court Registrar Natalie Whitby following their appointment as District Court judges. The appointments are effective from 9 June 2021, the Attorney General the Hon John Quigley MLA has announced.

The two appointments will fill vacancies left by the resignations from the District Court of His Hon. Ronald Birmingham and His Hon. Simon Freitag.

Law Society President Jocelyne Boujos said, “On behalf of the wider WA legal profession, I warmly congratulate Lisa Campbell-Tovey and Natalie Whitby on their appointments. Both appointees have extensive experience in criminal law matters and their respective skill sets are highly relevant to the jurisdiction of the District Court. They have made a valuable contribution to the legal profession in Western Australia, and we wish them all the best in their important new roles as District Court judges.”

Ms Lisa Campbell-Tovey was admitted to practice in 1992 and has been a legal practitioner for almost 30 years. She joined the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions as a prosecutor in 1996 before becoming a barrister at John Toohey Chambers in 2003.

Ms Whitby, a longstanding member of the Law Society, was admitted to practice in 1996 and joined the Law Society that same year. Ms Whitby has been a Registrar of the Supreme Court for 11 years. She holds a commission as an acting Magistrate, exercised in serious criminal matters.
