Law Society Welcomes Increase to Payroll Tax Threshold

Thursday, 31 October 2019

The Law Society of Western Australia welcomes today’s announcement by the State Government that it will lift the threshold on the exemption for payroll tax.

Premier the Hon Mark McGowan MLA said the Government was “raising the threshold on the exemption for payroll tax by $150,000 over two years – raising it to $950,000 on 1 January 2020 and then to $1 million a year later.”

In June this year, the Law Society joined with other peak professional and industry bodies to support a Chamber of Commerce and Industry WA (CCIWA) campaign to increase the threshold.

Law Society President Greg McIntyre SC said, “I commend the State Government on its decision. Increasing the payroll tax threshold will benefit small businesses and legal professionals working in private practice.

“The 2018 National Profile of Solicitors found that Western Australia is the State with the highest proportion of solicitors working in private practice (76%). Raising the payroll tax threshold will help small firms by reducing their tax burden and could allow for the creation of more employment opportunities.”
