The Law Society of Western Australia congratulates planning and environment lawyer Henry Jackson SC on his appointment as a Judge of the District Court of Western Australia and Deputy President of the State Administrative Tribunal (SAT). He will replace His Hon Judge David Parry at the District Court and SAT, commencing his duties on 31 January, as announced by the Attorney General the Hon John Quigley MLA today.
Law Society President Rebecca Lee said, “On behalf of the wider WA legal profession, I warmly congratulate Henry Jackson SC on his appointment. The Law Society wrote to the President of the State Administrative Tribunal in November last year, to express the Law Society’s support for the maintenance of the current practice of the Development and Resources stream at the State Administrative Tribunal of appointing Deputy Presidents who are a lawyer with current planning law experience. We are therefore pleased that Henry Jackson SC has been appointed. He has extensive experience in planning and environmental law and is also regularly briefed in disciplinary and regulatory criminal matters, making his skill set highly relevant to his new role.
“Henry Jackson SC joins an outstanding company of eminent lawyers with environmental and planning law expertise who have been appointed to that position, including Law Society Life Member and Past President the Hon John Chaney SC and more recently Judge David Parry. The community is fortunate indeed that a lawyer of that calibre has been found to fill the void that otherwise would have been left by the imminent retirement of Judge Parry.”
Mr Jackson SC was admitted to practice in 1998 and has practised for 24 years as a solicitor and then barrister in Victoria and Western Australia, becoming a Senior Counsel in 2019.
He is Chair of the Board of Francis Burt Chambers, maintains a pro bono practice for such clients as the Environmental Defenders Office and Tenancy WA, and has taught at The University of Western Australia and Murdoch University.
