The Law Society of Western Australia congratulates Her Honour Judge Julie Wager, who has been appointed as the new Chief Judge of the District Court. Judge Wager will replace His Honour Chief Judge Kevin Sleight, who retires on 1 May.

District Court Judge Hylton Quail has been appointed as the new President of the Children’s Court of Western Australia, replacing Judge Wager.

Law Society President Nicholas van Hattem said, “On behalf of the Law Society and the wider WA legal profession, I congratulate Judge Wager on her appointment as Chief Judge.

“Judge Wager is a highly respected judicial officer, who is well known to the local profession. Her Honour has been a valued member of the Law Society since first joining in 1990. Over the years, Judge Wager has made a notable contribution to the Society’s Continuing Professional Development programme for practitioners. The Society looks forward to working with the new Chief Judge.

“I would also like to recognise the lengthy and significant service of retiring Chief Judge Kevin Sleight, who has made a lasting contribution to the administration of justice in Western Australia, as a Judge of the District Court since 2005, and as Chief Judge since 2015. His Honour is also a member of the Law Society, having joined in 1975.

“I also take the opportunity to congratulate Judge Hylton Quail on His Honour’s appointment as President of the Children’s Court of WA. The Children’s Court has a vital role in deciding criminal matters involving young people; I have no doubt that Judge Quail will capably perform this role with the utmost objectivity and integrity.

“Judge Quail is a former President and current Life Member of the Law Society. In His Honour’s years as President, he demonstrated a deep and steadfast commitment to justice, as he has throughout his legal and judicial career. The Society looks forward to continuing to work with Judge Quail in his important new role.”
