The Law Society of Western Australia congratulates the Hon Christian Porter MP on his appointment as Attorney General of Australia. During a distinguished career in Western Australia, Mr Porter served as the state’s Attorney General between 2008 and 2012 before entering the Commonwealth Parliament in 2013.
“On behalf of the Western Australian legal profession, I warmly congratulate Mr Porter on his appointment as Federal Attorney General,” said Law Society President Alain Musikanth.
“Mr Porter is well-suited to assume the vitally important role of chief law officer of the Commonwealth. The Law Society extends its best wishes to Mr Porter in his new portfolio, and looks forward to working with him in 2018,” Mr Musikanth said.
Mr Porter follows in the footsteps of previous Commonwealth Attorneys General from Western Australia, including Billy Snedden (1964–1966), Peter Durack (1977–1983), Daryl Williams (1996–2003) and Mark Dreyfus (2013; educated in Melbourne but born in Perth).
“I also thank outgoing Attorney General, Senator the Hon George Brandis QC, for his considerable contribution and years of service, and wish him well in his new role,” Mr Musikanth said.
