The Law Society of Western Australia reaffirms its commitment to gender equality across the legal profession.
The Law Society has adopted the Law Council of Australia’s Diversity and Equality Charter, which states that the legal profession will treat all people with respect and dignity regardless of their gender, or indeed any other arbitrary feature. This is consistent with the principles of justice and integrity upon which the legal profession was founded.
Law Society President Elizabeth Needham said, “The Law Society encourages individuals and organisations alike to reject any form of discrimination or bias, promote gender equality in leadership positions and create flexible and inclusive workplaces.
“Tackling gender bias and retaining women in the legal profession has been, and will continue to be, a key strategic focus of the Law Society.”
The Law Society understands that His Honour Chief Magistrate Steven Heath has acknowledged the inappropriate nature of his recent comments at a CPD seminar, and has apologised unreservedly for those comments. The Law Society reminds all members of the legal profession of their responsibility to treat all people with dignity and respect.
