The Hon Wayne Martin AC, Chief Justice of Western Australia has today announced he will be retiring from the Supreme Court, finishing in his role on 27 July 2018.
The Chief Justice was appointed on 1 May 2006 and throughout his tenure, among other things has been a strong advocate for the Court and broader judicial system, for access to justice, and for justice reinvestment.
The Chief Justice has also vocally supported those most disenfranchised by issues that impinge on access to justice, placing an essential focus on the unacceptable and disproportionate rates of incarceration of indigenous peoples, and speaking against mandatory sentencing.
In 2012, the Chief Justice was recognised nationally when he was appointed a Companion in the General Division of the Order of Australia “for eminent service to the judiciary and to the law, particularly as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Western Australia, to legal reform and education, and to the community”.
Law Society President Hayley Cormann said, “The Hon Wayne Martin AC is a life member of the Law Society of Western Australia. He served as President of the Society in 2006 before being appointed as Chief Justice of Western Australia. He has made a vast contribution to law in Western Australia and on behalf of the Executive, Council and all members of the Law Society, I thank His Honour for his exceptional service to our justice system and our broader community. We wish him the very best in his future endeavours.”
A ceremonial sitting of the Full Bench of the Supreme Court of Western Australia will be held on 20 July in the David Malcolm Justice Centre to farewell the Chief Justice.
