2019 Sir Ronald Wilson Lecture: Climate Change – Political and Legal Accountability

Friday, 2 August 2019

The 2019 Sir Ronald Wilson Lecture will explore significant issues related to climate change, including the Commonwealth Government’s current initiatives and future options.

Bronwyn Bell, Manager Policy – Natural Resources, The Chamber of Minerals and Energy of Western Australia, and Tim Macknay, Principal Solicitor, Environmental Defender’s Office Western Australia, will bring different perspectives to this interactive panel discussion chaired by Law Society President Greg McIntyre SC.

The Sir Ronald Wilson Lecture will be held on Wednesday, 7 August 2019 from 5.30pm at Brookfield Place, 123 St Georges Terrace, Perth. Topics of discussion will include:

  • Climate change;
  • Commonwealth Government contemporary initiatives (within the last three years) to address climate change;
  • Options over the next three years for the Commonwealth Government to address climate change;
  • The lawmaking process in Parliament and the courts, with reference to the influence of political parties and pressure groups; and
  • The status of international covenants, protocols and treaties of relevance to climate change in Australia.

An audience Q&A session will follow the panel discussion.

Since 1989, the Sir Ronald Wilson Lecture has provided an opportunity for students and the wider public to hear esteemed figures address important legal, social and public policy issues.

This free event provides attendees with opportunity to learn more about climate change and the related political and legal landscape, and gives them the chance to put their questions to the panel.
