Current Areas of Law Reform & Advocacy Agenda

The Law Society of Western Australia’s advocacy is currently focused on the following areas of law reform:

  • Liquor Control (Protected Entertainment Precincts) Amendment Bill 2022
  • Stage 2 Review of the Model Defamation Provisions: Part A: Liability of internet Intermediaries for Third Party Content
  • Review of Australia’s Modern Slavery Act
  • Exemptions for Litigation Funding Schemes
  • Derivative actions in deceased estate matters
  • Legislative responses to coercive control in Western Australia
  • Review of the Youth Offenders Act
  • Review of the Associations
  • Incorporation Act 2015

 

The advocacy agenda is developed as part of the Law Society’s strategic plan.  The current agenda includes:

  • Youth detention – Banksia Hill
  • Protected Entertainment Precincts
  • Review of existing and potentially new accreditation programmes for areas of legal practice
  • Fair, Safe and Inclusive Legal Workplaces: Law Clerks, Graduates and Lawyers
  • Proposal for compulsory re-action mediation in estate matters
  • Legal Practice Board Sexual Harassment reporting processes
  • Uniform Law
  • Retention of women in the legal profession
