The group focuses on bringing events to young lawyers that encourage networking and socialising across the profession. These activities also encourage young lawyers to build networks and friendships in order to work towards better mental health and a sense of belonging.
The Education subcommittee focusses on providing information and running events targeted at assisting both students and those within the profession to find their dream career in the law. The YLC runs two careers events every year, focussed on social justice careers and careers outside of big commercial law firms, and attends high school and university careers fairs to promote the legal profession and the Law Society. The subcommittee also develops Continuing Professional Development (CPD) events targeted at young lawyers.
The subcommittee focuses on advocating for early careers lawyers to improve the legal profession for the future as well as around social justice issues, for example, by raising submissions for the Law Society Council, running events to raise awareness of social justice issues and issues impacting early career lawyers, conducting surveys and preparing publications. In recent years, the YLC has prepared the Law Society’s Fair, Safe, Inclusive Legal Workplaces Guidelines and Know Your Rights Guide, run events on topics such as Indigenous legal issues and discrimination and inclusion in the legal profession, and advocated for better pathways for reporting sexual harassment. The YLC also has a representative on the committee for the Campaign for a Human Rights Act in WA.
The group contributes to the development and publishing of communications on social media, YLC News and Brief to keep young lawyers informed on upcoming events and current initiatives the YLC are working on.
