Mary Ann Brown, murdered in Champion Bay in 1876 by her husband Kenneth Brown, was like many victims of domestic violence, past to present, suffering coercion and violence until it was irrevocably too late. The cultural stereotypes present in both 1876 and today which enable violence and devalue the equity of women’s safety are starkly similar, despite one and a half centuries of cultural, political and legal progress. An expert panel will expand on themes of women’s access to justice and stereotypes surrounding family and domestic violence which were explored in The Unfortunate Woman v Her Well-Respected Killer exhibition at the Old Court House Law Museum. Panellists: The Hon Lindy Jenkins, retired Supreme Court Justice and Chair of the Law Reform Commission Dr Jennie Gray, CEO of Women’s Legal Services WA Gail Beck, Executive Manager Cultural Integration, RUAH Mark O’Hare, Deputy CEO of Stopping Family Violence   Limited seats available, tickets $25.
