Lessons from the Robodebt Royal Commission

The Robodebt Royal Commission has now published the report of its inquiry into the Robodebt Scheme (the Scheme).  Presented by Adam Sharpe, this seminar will explore elements of the report as it examines the role of government lawyers in respect of the Scheme as well as institutional checks and balances that did not prevent an unlawful scheme from being administered by the Commonwealth Government between 2015 and 2019.  The Scheme and the Royal Commission’s report provides this seminar with an opportunity for reflection on the role and ethical obligations of lawyers, in particular government lawyers, and the operation and effectiveness of Commonwealth institutions that are tasked with ensuring that the Commonwealth Government conducts the business of government in a lawful manner.

  1. This seminar is subject to change.
  2. The Legal Practice Board of Western Australia states that CPD Points are awarded for a full hour and/ or half hour of attendance. Lesser periods are rounded down to the nearest half hour.
  3. A practitioner cannot claim CPD points for attending a seminar that has the same content during the same CPD year. The content must extend the practitioner’s knowledge and skills in areas that are relevant to the solicitor’s practice needs or professional development.  Practitioners should not request CPD points for any subsequent seminars which contain the same or similar content within the same CPD year.
