During 2024, the combination of a record prisoner population and staffing shortages has resulted in negative impacts on prisoners, including cramped conditions, extended lock-up periods, and limited services. This has resulted in the Inspector of Custodial Services issuing a Show Cause Notice for the first time to the Department of Custodial Services, highlighting concerns of a serious risk to the safety, care or welfare of prisoners as well as prisoners being subjected to cruel, inhumane or degrading treatment in Hakea Prison.
Join us for a panel discussion with Eamon Ryan, the Inspector of Custodial Services and His Honour Judge Nicholas Egan from the District Court as they discuss the current issues with the custodial estate, the impacts on prisoners and sentencing considerations.
Additional presenters to be announced.
