1. Everything I wanted to know about Uniform Law Costs but was too afraid to ask

Fraser Robertson, Barrister, John Toohey Chambers
Dale Wescombe, Manager of Dispute Resolution, Legal Practice Board
David Garnsworthy, Barrister

The commencement of the Legal Profession Uniform Law (LPUL) scheme means big changes are coming to the Profession in Western Australia.

This session focuses on billing, cost disclosures and legal costs in general, and aims to answer ‘everything you wanted to know about Uniform Law Costs but was too afraid to ask.’

2. Difficult Clients & Colleagues: How to Identify and Manage the Issues

Ronwyn North, Managing Director, Streeton Consulting Pty Ltd

Practitioners often comment that they had a gut feeling that the client would be difficult from the outset that a client would be difficult and wish they had not engaged the client at all. Proactively managing clients who do not value your services can reduce your risk of complaints, professional negligence claims, financial loss, and stress.

This course will provide a framework for identifying difficult clients and practical strategies for managing them, equipping practitioners to:

  • Decide whether to take on the client in the first place;
  • Set appropriate boundaries for the engagement; and
  • Confront difficult client behaviours to get the relationship ‘back on track’ or decline/terminate the engagement ethically

3. Culture Wars: The New Battleground

Adam Levine, Partner, K&L Gates

There is a crisis of culture, or ‘culture shocks’ occurring in various industries, including financial services, retail and start-ups. This has attracted the attention of regulators, legislators and other stakeholders.

This seminar examines what culture actually is, explores the legal and general risks arising from poor culture, and considers the steps that can be taken to address it.

There are five sections to this seminar:

  1. The first section looks at examples of unethical behaviour in corporate Australia and the culture that drove such unethical actions.
  2. Section two explores what corporate culture is, the symptoms and effects of poor culture and refers to regulators and applicable legislation for accountability.
  3. Section three examines good culture.
  4. Section four looks at how to build or rebuild a positive culture, taking into account the board perspective, as well as policies and processes for implementation.
  5. Section five provides a summary and Q&A discussions.

Disclaimer:

  1. This seminar is subject to change.
  2. The Legal Practice Board of Western Australia states that CPD units are awarded for a full hour and/ or half-hour of attendance. Lesser periods are rounded down to the nearest half hour.
  3. A practitioner cannot claim CPD units for attending a seminar that has the same content during the same CPD year. The content must extend the practitioner’s knowledge and skills in areas that are relevant to the solicitor’s practice needs or professional development.  Practitioners should not request CPD units for any subsequent seminars that contain the same or similar content within the same CPD year.
